Once Playstation 3 and Wii, if they ever do, Microsoft may decide to drop the Xbox Live fee. This won’t necessarily mean a sub par service, however, simply a free one possibly laden with more ads.

Although there is already a huge amount of people playing on Xbox Live, making this service free would add even more users to its already strong user base. Not only would this expand the service, making it the biggest and best online gaming service for a console, but it would also encourage more people to purchase an Xbox 360. It could be the final tipping point for those who are stuck between purchasing an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. Not only would Xbox be much cheaper, there would now be free Xbox Live which I believe just couldn’t be passed up. This would force Sony to step up its game by either dropping prices to be a bit more reasonable or add to its online service.

Either way, I believe Microsoft remains at top. They make a substantial amount of money by charging for Xbox Live because users are willing to pay for a superior online gaming experience. Take this away and allow for free Xbox Live and we would see an increase in users and console sales. As long as Xbox Live is still worth paying for, we will all continue to pay and not worry about free Xbox Live.
